Baseball is back in the Olympics for the first time since 2008, and it's sure to be one of the most exciting events of the 2024 Tokyo Summer Games. With six teams competing for the gold medal, there's no shortage of storylines to follow. Here's everything you need to know about baseball in the 2024 Tokyo Olympics:

The Rules and Regulations

Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each. The goal of the game is to score more runs than the other team by hitting the ball and running around the bases. The game is played on a field with four bases: home plate, first base, second base, and third base. The batter stands at home plate and tries to hit the ball pitched by the pitcher. If the batter hits the ball, they run around the bases and try to score a run. The pitcher's goal is to prevent the batter from hitting the ball or to get the batter out by throwing three strikes.

There are a number of different ways to get out in baseball, including:

  • Strikeout: The batter swings at and misses three pitches.
  • Groundout: The batter hits the ball on the ground and a fielder throws the ball to first base before the batter can reach it.
  • Flyout: The batter hits the ball in the air and a fielder catches it.
  • Tag out: A runner is touched by a fielder with the ball while they are not on a base.
  • Force out: A runner is forced to advance to the next base because the batter has hit the ball, and there is a runner on the previous base.

The game is played in nine innings, and the team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. If the game is tied at the end of nine innings, extra innings are played until one team wins.
