Early Life and Education

Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of five children. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker. Barton's family was poor, but she was determined to get an education. She attended public school and later studied at Oxford Female Seminary.

Barton was a bright and curious student. She loved to read and learn about new things. She was also a talented musician and artist. After graduating from seminary, Barton taught school for several years. She also worked as a clerk and a seamstress.

The Civil War

In 1861, the Civil War broke out. Barton was deeply concerned about the suffering of the soldiers. She knew that they needed medical supplies and nursing care. Barton decided to volunteer her services to the Union Army.

Barton organized and led a group of volunteer nurses who provided medical care to wounded soldiers on the battlefield. She also worked to collect and distribute medical supplies. Barton's work was tireless and she often put herself in danger to help others.
