Pedroia was a standout baseball player in high school. He was named the Sacramento Bee's Player of the Year in 2001 and was selected to play in the 2001 California All-Star Game. Pedroia also played in the Connie Mack World Series in 2001 and 2002.
After graduating from high school, Pedroia attended Arizona State University, where he played baseball for the Sun Devils. Pedroia was a two-time All-American at Arizona State and was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2004.
