Legal Career and Advocacy

After graduating from law school, Ginsburg embarked on a highly successful legal career. She taught law at Rutgers University and Columbia Law School, while also working as a litigator with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). As an ACLU lawyer, she argued six landmark cases before the Supreme Court, including Frontiero v. Richardson (1973),which challenged gender discrimination in the military.

Appointment to the Supreme Court

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsburg to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She served on this court for thirteen years, where she authored numerous influential opinions. In 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated Ginsburg to the Supreme Court, making her the second female Justice in history.

Supreme Court Justice

As a Supreme Court Justice, Ginsburg quickly became known for her sharp intellect, incisive writing, and unwavering commitment to justice. She authored landmark opinions that advanced gender equality, including United States v. Virginia (1996),which struck down the male-only admissions policy of the Virginia Military Institute.

However, Ginsburg was also known for her powerful dissents, which often became rallying cries for progressive causes. Her dissenting opinion in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (2007) criticized the Court's narrow interpretation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg's legacy extends far beyond her time on the Supreme Court. She was a tireless advocate for gender equality, a mentor to countless young lawyers, and a role model for generations of Americans.
