Early Life and Education
Patsy Mink was born on December 6, 1927, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents were Japanese immigrants who worked hard to provide for their family. Mink excelled in school and graduated from high school as valedictorian. She went on to attend the University of Hawaii, where she majored in political science. After graduating from college, Mink worked as a social worker and a teacher.
Political Career
Mink's political career began in 1956 when she was elected to the Hawaii Territorial Legislature. She was the first woman of Japanese ancestry to be elected to a state legislature in the United States. In 1964, Mink was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first woman of color to serve in Congress. She served in the House for 12 terms, representing the 2nd Congressional District of Hawaii.
Legacy
Patsy Mink was a tireless advocate for civil rights and gender equality. She was a co-author of the Title IX amendment to the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Mink also worked to improve healthcare for women and children, and she was a strong supporter of environmental protection.
Mink retired from Congress in 1998. She died of a heart attack on September 28, 2002. She was 74 years old.
