Early Life and Training
Sargent Ramie Targoff was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 14, 1867. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a talented amateur painter. Targoff showed an early interest in art, and he began taking lessons at the Cowles Art School in Boston when he was just 15 years old.
In 1886, Targoff traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian, one of the most prestigious art schools in Europe. There, he studied under the renowned painter Jules Lefebvre. Targoff quickly adopted the impressionist style, which emphasized capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere.
Artistic Career
After returning to the United States in 1889, Targoff established a studio in New York City. He began exhibiting his work at the National Academy of Design and other major galleries. Targoff's paintings were well-received by critics, and he quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in the American art scene.
In the 1890s, Targoff began to travel extensively, painting landscapes in New England, California, and Europe. He was particularly drawn to the rugged coastline of Maine, and he painted many of his most famous works there. Targoff's paintings are characterized by their vibrant colors, loose brushwork, and sense of movement.
Legacy
Sargent Ramie Targoff died in New York City on May 10, 1946. He was 78 years old. Although he never achieved the same level of fame as some of his contemporaries, Targoff's work is now highly regarded by art historians and collectors. His paintings are represented in many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
Rediscovering Targoff
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the work of Sargent Ramie Targoff. In 2010, the Spanierman Gallery in New York City举办了回顾展Targoff's work. The exhibition was a critical success, and it helped to introduce Targoff's work to a new generation of art lovers.
