About the Book
The Arab of the Future is a coming-of-age graphic memoir that explores the complexities of growing up in the Middle East during the 1980s and 1990s. The book follows the author, Riad Sattouf, as he navigates the challenges of adolescence and identity in a region torn apart by war and political upheaval.
Sattouf was born in Paris to a Syrian father and a French mother. His early years were spent in Libya, where his father worked as a university professor. In 1984, the family was forced to flee the country after his father was accused of being a spy. They settled in Syria, where Sattouf spent the next ten years of his life.
The Arab of the Future is a deeply personal and moving account of Sattouf's childhood and adolescence. He writes about his experiences with racism, prejudice, and violence, as well as his struggles to come to terms with his own identity. The book is also a vivid and insightful portrait of a region in turmoil.
