The Indestructible Tom Crean: An Epic Tale of Survival and Triumph in the Antarctic
The Extraordinary Life of Tom Crean
Tom Crean was born in 1877 in Annascaul, County Kerry, Ireland. He was the youngest of seven children, and his family was poor. At the age of 16, Crean left home to join the Royal Navy. He served for 12 years, and during that time he saw action in the Boer War.
In 1910, Crean joined the Terra Nova Expedition, which was led by Robert Falcon Scott. The goal of the expedition was to reach the South Pole. Crean was one of the team that reached the pole, but the expedition ended in tragedy when Scott and his companions died on the return journey.
