Synopsis
Vathek: An Arabian Tale is a Gothic and Orientalist novella by William Beckford, first published in French in 1782. It tells the story of Vathek, ninth-century Caliph of Baghdad, whose insatiable desire for knowledge and power leads him on a dangerous quest.
Along the way, Vathek encounters a cast of fantastical characters, including the mysterious Giaour, the beautiful Nouronihar, and the demonic Eblis. He also witnesses a series of supernatural events, including a visit to the subterranean palace of the sorcerer Sutlememe, where he encounters the Hall of Eblis and the Fire of Genii.
Vathek: An Arabian Tale is a classic of Gothic and Orientalist literature, and is considered to be one of the first Gothic novels. It has been praised for its vivid imagery, its suspenseful plot, and its exploration of themes such as the dangers of ambition, the allure of the supernatural, and the power of love.
