Early Life

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the son of Thomas Lincoln, a farmer, and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Lincoln's early life was marked by poverty and hardship. His family moved several times, and he had little formal education.

Despite his lack of education, Lincoln was a voracious reader and a gifted storyteller. He also developed a strong work ethic and a deep love of justice. In 1830, Lincoln's family moved to Illinois. He soon became involved in politics and was elected to the state legislature in 1834.

Political Career

Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature for eight years. During this time, he became a leading advocate for the abolition of slavery. In 1846, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served one term in the House and then returned to Illinois.

In 1858, Lincoln ran for the United States Senate against Stephen A. Douglas. The two candidates engaged in a series of seven debates that became known as the Lincoln-Douglas debates. These debates were a major turning point in American history, as they helped to focus the nation's attention on the issue of slavery.

In 1860, Lincoln was elected president of the United States. He took office at a time when the nation was deeply divided over the issue of slavery. Within months of Lincoln's inauguration, the Confederate States of America was formed. The Civil War began in 1861 and lasted for four years.

The Civil War

Lincoln was determined to preserve the Union and to end slavery. He led the country through the Civil War, which was the bloodiest conflict in American history. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which freed all slaves in Confederate-held territory. The war ended in 1865 with the Union victory.

Assassination

Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. Booth was a Confederate sympathizer who was angry about Lincoln's policies. Lincoln's assassination was a national tragedy, and he is mourned to this day.

Legacy

Abraham Lincoln is considered one of the greatest presidents in American history. He is remembered for his leadership during the Civil War, for his role in the abolition of slavery, and for his deep commitment to justice and equality. Lincoln's legacy continues to inspire people around the world.

Abraham Lincoln was a complex and fascinating figure. He was a man of great intelligence, courage, and determination. He led the country through one of its darkest periods and helped to shape the course of American history. Lincoln's legacy is one of hope, inspiration, and the promise of a better future.
