Interview with Shira Lipkin
In this interview, Shira Lipkin discusses her writing process, her influences, and her hopes for the future of speculative fiction.
Apex Magazine: Welcome, Shira! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today.
Shira Lipkin: It's my pleasure.
Apex Magazine: Can you tell us a little bit about your writing process?
Shira Lipkin: I usually start with a character or a setting that I'm drawn to. I'll write a few scenes or a sketch of the story, and then I'll let it sit for a while. I'll come back to it later and see what happens next. I like to let the story unfold organically, rather than trying to force it into a predetermined shape.
Apex Magazine: Who are some of your influences?
Shira Lipkin: I'm influenced by a wide range of writers, including Ursula K. Le Guin, Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, and Neil Gaiman. I'm also inspired by mythology, folklore, and the natural world.
Apex Magazine: What are your hopes for the future of speculative fiction?
Shira Lipkin: I hope that speculative fiction will continue to be a place where writers can explore new ideas and challenge the status quo. I hope that it will continue to be a genre that is inclusive and diverse, and that it will reflect the world we live in.
The Redwood and the Witch
"The Redwood and the Witch" is a haunting and lyrical tale of a young woman who encounters a mysterious witch in the depths of an ancient forest. The story explores themes of loss, longing, and the power of memory.
The story begins with the young woman, Anya, wandering through the forest, lost and alone. She comes across a strange and beautiful tree, a redwood so tall that its branches seem to reach up to the sky. As Anya approaches the tree, she hears a voice calling her name.
Anya follows the voice to a clearing, where she sees a witch sitting by a fire. The witch is old and wrinkled, with long white hair and piercing blue eyes. Anya is afraid of the witch, but she is also drawn to her. The witch tells Anya that she can help her find her way out of the forest, but first she must tell her a story.
The witch's story is about a young woman who was lost in the forest, just like Anya. The young woman wandered for days, until she came across a redwood tree. The tree told her that it could help her find her way out of the forest, but first she must tell it a story.
The young woman told the tree a story about her life, her hopes, and her dreams. The tree listened patiently, and when the young woman was finished, it told her how to find her way out of the forest.
The witch's story ends, and Anya realizes that she is the young woman in the story. The witch has helped her to remember her past, and now she can find her way out of the forest.
Anya thanks the witch and turns to leave. But before she goes, the witch gives her a warning. She tells Anya that the forest is a dangerous place, and that she must be careful. Anya promises to be careful, and then she sets off into the forest.
Anya walks for hours, and finally she comes to the edge of the forest. She looks back and sees the redwood tree in the distance. She knows that she will never forget the witch or the tree, and she is grateful for their help.
