Barbara Jordan was an American lawyer and politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Texas from 1973 to 1979. She was the first African American woman to be elected to the Texas Senate and the first African American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress.
Jordan was born in Houston, Texas, on February 21, 1936. She attended Texas Southern University and Boston University School of Law. After graduating from law school, Jordan worked as an attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In 1972, she was elected to the Texas Senate. In 1974, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
During her time in Congress, Jordan served on the Judiciary Committee and the Budget Committee. She was a vocal advocate for civil rights and social justice. She also played a key role in the impeachment hearings against President Richard Nixon.
In 1979, Jordan resigned from Congress to become a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. She continued to teach and write about public policy until her death in 1996.
Barbara Jordan was a pioneer for women and minorities in politics. She was a brilliant orator and a passionate advocate for justice. Her legacy continues to inspire people today.
