Early Life
Cyrus the Great was born in 576 BC in Anshan, Persia. He was the son of Cambyses I, the king of Anshan, and Mandane, the daughter of Astyages, the king of Media. Cyrus was a member of the Achaemenid dynasty, a Persian royal family that ruled over Anshan for centuries.
As a young man, Cyrus was educated in the Persian court. He learned about military strategy, politics, and religion. He was also a skilled athlete and hunter.
Rise to Power
In 559 BC, Cyrus's father died and Cyrus became the king of Anshan. He quickly began to expand his kingdom, conquering the neighboring states of Elam and Media. In 546 BC, Cyrus led his army into battle against the Lydian Empire, one of the most powerful empires in the world. After a long and bloody siege, Cyrus captured the Lydian capital, Sardis, and overthrew King Croesus.
Cyrus's victory over Lydia made him the master of all of Asia Minor. He continued to expand his empire, conquering the Babylonian Empire in 539 BC and the Egyptian Empire in 525 BC. By the time of his death in 530 BC, Cyrus the Great had created the largest empire in the world.
