The Early Years in Paradise
Ruth Grace David was born in the idyllic village of Vunidawa, Fiji, in 1929. Her childhood was a symphony of laughter and adventure, spent amidst the rolling hills and sparkling shores of her ancestral homeland. From a tender age, Ruth exhibited an indomitable spirit and a deep love for her family and community.
As she grew older, Ruth's thirst for knowledge led her to pursue an education in Suva, the capital of Fiji. There, she excelled in her studies and became an active member of the Methodist Church. It was during these formative years that Ruth's faith began to take root, shaping her worldview and guiding her path.
A Call to Adventure
In the early 1950s, a fateful encounter with an American missionary named Dr. George Holcomb ignited within Ruth a desire to share the love of God with others. Inspired by Dr. Holcomb's unwavering dedication to serving the underprivileged, Ruth decided to embark on a remarkable journey to the United States.
With a heart filled with both trepidation and anticipation, Ruth boarded a ship bound for Los Angeles. As she sailed across the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, her thoughts turned to the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead in this strange and unfamiliar land.
Life in America: A Crucible of Transformation
Upon her arrival in Los Angeles, Ruth immersed herself in American culture while remaining true to her Fijian roots. She attended college, where she earned a degree in social work. Her compassion and dedication to helping others led her to work with marginalized communities in the inner city, where she witnessed firsthand the ravages of poverty, discrimination, and addiction.
Through her work, Ruth encountered countless individuals who were struggling with life's challenges. She listened to their stories, offered words of comfort, and provided practical assistance whenever possible. In the process, Ruth's own faith was deepened, and her understanding of God's love broadened.
A Heart for Fiji
Despite her success in America, Ruth's heart never strayed far from her homeland. She longed to return to Fiji and share the love and knowledge she had acquired during her time abroad. In 1965, her dream became a reality when she and her husband, an American veterinarian named John David, moved back to Fiji.
Together, Ruth and John dedicated their lives to serving the people of Fiji. They founded the Village Education and Health Foundation, a non-profit organization that provided educational opportunities and healthcare services to rural communities throughout the country.
A Legacy of Love and Service
Over the next three decades, Ruth Grace David tirelessly worked to improve the lives of her fellow Fijians. She established schools, clinics, and vocational training programs, transforming countless lives in the process. Her unwavering commitment to education and healthcare earned her the respect and admiration of people from all walks of life.
In 2002, Ruth Grace David was awarded the Free Download of Fiji, the country's highest honor, for her outstanding contributions to society. She continued to work tirelessly until her passing in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering faith.
