Buck was born in 1924 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He grew up in a family of sports fans, and he developed a love of baseball at an early age. Buck's father was a semi-professional baseball player, and he often took his son to games. Buck would also listen to baseball games on the radio, and he was fascinated by the voices of the broadcasters.

After graduating from high school, Buck attended the University of Missouri. He studied journalism, and he also played baseball for the Tigers. Buck was a talented player, and he was offered a contract by the St. Louis Browns. However, Buck decided to pursue a career in broadcasting instead.

Buck's broadcasting career began in the minor leagues. He worked for several different teams, and he quickly developed a reputation as one of the best young broadcasters in the business. In 1954, Buck was hired by the Cardinals. He would spend the next 49 years broadcasting Cardinals games, and he would become one of the most iconic voices in baseball.

Buck's calls of Cardinals games were legendary. He had a unique ability to capture the excitement of the game, and his voice was always filled with passion. Buck was also known for his wit and his humor, and he often made listeners laugh with his off-the-cuff remarks.
